By overwhelming margins, the House and Senate passed this week significant reforms to the Food and Drug Administration’s drug safety review system. The centerpiece of the bill includes strong consumer protections. President Bush has sent mixed signals on whether or not he will sign the bill, which passed the House 405 to 7 and passed the Senate unanimously.

Uninsured consumers in Baltimore pay nearly 62 percent more for common prescription drugs than what the drug companies charge the federal government, according to a new Maryland Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) report released today.

In a victory for consumers, the Senate today passed the “Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act” sponsored by Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) by a vote of 93 to 1.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee approved by a 15 to 5 vote S.1082, a bill that reauthorizes prescription drug user fees, and includes drug safety language designed to prevent another Vioxx-like drug from reaching the market.
